Kumara Wakjira
Ethiopia
Kumara Wakjira is being honoured for over three decades of contribution to wildlife conservation in Ethiopia and the broader Horn of Africa region. His work modernising the national wildlife policy, transforming public attitudes, strengthening ranger capacity, and pioneering innovative solutions to safeguard threatened species and habitats across the country makes him a worthy winner.
Born in Horo Guduru Wollega, western Ethiopia, Kumara grew up surrounded by wildlife and natural landscapes, his connection to the environment became instinctive from a young age.
Kumara is now the Director-General at EWCA, Ethiopia’s national authority for wildlife conservation. Under his leadership, the country’s approach to conservation has evolved into a co-ordinated, national mission. His work has redefined what conservation looks like in a developing nation – one that places wildlife protection at the heart of sustainable growth and cultural identity.
Kumara remains a hands-on leader, frequently travelling across Ethiopia’s vast terrain, including 27 National Parks to conduct wildlife censuses, monitor projects, and meet with communities living around protected areas.
Kumara’s achievements span conservation, governance, research, innovation and teaching. Above all, he is most proud of the significant growth in understanding from stakeholders and authorities and gaining their support around conservation efforts.
Through his vision, integrity, and tireless dedication, Kumara Wakjira has strengthened the protection of Ethiopia’s wildlife and inspired collaboration across Africa. His work exemplifies the courage, innovation, and compassion celebrated by the Tusk Prince William Award for Conservation in Africa.
